HTC is pressing on, despite years on the edge of oblivion. The company’s 2018 flagship will apparently be called the HTC U12 and, while it didn’t launch at MWC 2018, we now have some pretty juicy details about the handset’s specs.
The handset itself was shown off at a 5G event last month and reliable tipster LlabTooFeR, a ROM developer, was on hand to document the device’s specs and hardware features.
According to the leaker, the HTC U12’s specs will look something like this:
- CPU SD845
- Display 5.99 QHD+
- 6 GB Ram
- MicroSD UpTo 256 GB
- Dual Main Camera 12mp + 16mp (Sony IMX3xx)
- Front Camera 8mp
- Battery 3420mah
- IP68
- HTC Face Unlock
- Edge Sense 2.0
- Android 8.0 + Sense 10
- Full treble support and A/B (Seamless) Updates
- Single and Dual SIM version
If true, HTC could well have one of the best smartphones around when it launches its U12. The storage alone is something of a game-changer in the Android space, especially if the price is decent.
Including the Snapdragon 845 CPU alongside 6GB of RAM will ensure great performance, and Sony’s IMX sensors are well known for their abilities, so imaging should be very strong.
“HTC Face Unlock” indicates the handset will use a similar technology to Apple’s Face ID, whereby the user unlocks the phone with their face. Hence the name.

Google Treble is supported, meaning fast updates, and the HTC U12 will even be water resistant. All in all, the U12 sounds superb on paper. For me, the big thing is the storage – 256GB is A LOT. Should HTC get the pricing right on this, that could prove to be a big USP for floating voters.
We’ve seen images of the handset, housed inside capsules at said event, but it was hard to discern any design elements as the majority of the phone was hidden, save for the display. HTC’s design has kind of been all over the place of late, so it’s anyone’s guess what this phone will look like once it arrives.
Give me something simple and elegant and I’d be more than willing to go once more around the maypole with HTC. The specs and hardware on this phone are superb, so the company could finally have something competitive on its hands for 2018’s market.
